Abstract: W-algebras are a class of vertex algebras that find many applications in both mathematics and mathematical physics. While some classes of examples are fairly well-understood, they are still quite mysterious. Here, I want to review some of what's known and then sketch (in a not-too-technical fashion) a promising new approach to W-algebras and their representations based on old work of Semikhatov and recent work of Adamović.
